The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was without a doubt rock and roll’s most historic event and was the creation of four young men named John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang. The festival took place from August 15 to August 18, 1969 at Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, NY.

Around HALF-A-MILLION - mostly hippies - attended, although it was projected there would be 200,000 (186,000 tickets were sold beforehand). The fence was cut and the festival went FREE when it was realized that there were hundreds of thousands more people than the organizers had prepared for.  What makes the large numbers so amazing is that it was anything but easy to get to in the first place.  If you look at a map of where Bethel, New York is and try to imagine all the people trying to get there at once, you have to ask yourself -- If HALF-A-MILLION made it there, then how many couldn’t handle the traffic and decided to turn back?   Another  100,000 or 200,000? Hmmm….

These were times when innocence clashed with unrest and protest, especially in regard to the Vietnam War.  Yasgur’s Farm was like a city in which its residents dwelled in peace, love, freedom, sharing, psychotropic drugs, mudslides and rock and roll music.

Some of the performers at Woodstock included Richie Havens, The Who, Joan Baez, Santana, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arlo Guthrie, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
